Mary Did You Know..........

Almost every year at Christmas time, I get a request to sing the song, Mary did You Know. I love that song (as does my pastor, hence the request) and every year I pull out the music, call the pianist, and we prepare.

In the past three years have, since I started this job, Christmas has looked different for me. No longer am I working shift work, with one day off, but I have more time to reflect, to appreciate. Also, I have come to know Mary, in a different a single teen girl....with her own brand of an unplanned pregnancy.
Normally, I appreciate it, but it doesn't affect me.
Until today......
Today, I sat across from a young girl, who is about 10 weeks pregnant. She would have been about the same age as Mary, when Mary was pregnant. And although the circumstances are different......I wonder if the questions are the same.
What am I will I raise this baby.....will  my boyfriend leave can I make sure my baby has the isn't enough, how will I will my family react.
And so, the questions continue.
And for the first time....the mother of Jesus became very real to me, as I looked this young woman in her fear filled eyes. How does a teenage girl comprehend, that she is carrying the Son of God in her body? How does a young and innocent girl, carry the weight of false judgement for her pregnancy?
Sometimes I wonder, if Mary knew....she would have been obedient.

Mary did you know, that your baby boy would give sight to the blind man
Mary did you know, that your baby boy would calm a storm with his hand
Did you know, that your baby boy has walked where angels trod
When you kiss your little baby, you have kissed the face of God.
Mary, did you know?

  1. Oh, I love that song. I was listening to the Isaacs version on the way into town earlier thinking about the same questions you were pondering. I would like to come hear you.....will that be Christmas Eve??
