Patience, how I hate Thee

When I was 25 years old, I dislocated and shattered my left knee cap. It was a random freak accident, involving an overactive young adults band, and a teeny beany baby lamb, from McDonald's. It left me either on crutches or a brace for several months. I remember when my grandfather found out what happened. He called me. "I've been praying for patience for you."
Really? really? Was that before or after this happened? Couldn't you have prayed that I received a large cash gift, or possibly a new car? Patience? Don't want it.

If you ever been in a prayer group with me, or heaven forbid, had me lead your Bible know....I will not pray for patience for anyone, I will just pray that they get what they need quickly, and are able to get on with life.

I just read (and I really did forget this) that it is a fruit of the spirit. Um....that's a kicker.

And then, if that's not bad enough, I read this:

Therefore as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Colossians 3:12

So....gees Louise, if I am living as God's chosen, and I like to believe that I am......I am called to have patience. Makes me cringe a bit. Until tonight............................

Tonight was spent with a dear friend. And tonight she shared something I waited 6 years to hear, even though I didn't know it.
And in that moment, there was love and grace, freedom.....and patience. Patience.

And so, I am resolved to learn this patience thing....once and for all......I just hope it doesn't take too long.

  1. How can something that is also known as "long-suffering" be a bad thing? Sounds positively character-building...

  2. Character building is great, right up until the moment when your character starts being 'built'.

I'll pray for grace for you, in your struggles.

  3. I always think of how you told us to pray that God would GIVE us patience, not that He would TEACH us patience.
